Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Try before you buy

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) were introduced in April 2009 as an amendment to the Mental Capacity Act. Their purpose was to provide a lawful means to restrict freedoms where this is deemed in the best interests of the treatment or care for someone lacking capacity.

This awareness course details the context from which DoLS emerged and considers its current application in social are through the stages of application, assessment and authorisation.

By the end of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards course, you will:

· Understand the relationship with the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act
· Understand the 5 principles that underpin both the Mental Capacity Act and DoLS
· Understand the definition, origins, legal basis and components of DoLS
· Understand the roles and remit of the agents and institutions within the DoLS framework
· Understand the application, assessment and authorisation processes
