Professional Boundaries and Good Practice (Half Day)

Course Overview



This half day course provides an opportunity for all workers who come into contact with service users to explore what is meant by boundaries and good practice and to identify ways in which boundaries can be established and maintained so as to protect both the worker and the service user and also to consider how they can be broken and the consequences of this.

Learning Outcomes



This course aims to equip delegates with a better understanding of:
  • What boundaries are and why they are so important
  • What the professional requirements of us are in terms of boundaries and good practice
  • How and when to share information, how to explain these requirements to a service user
  • How and why a professional relationship is different to a friendship
  • Why self disclosure and touch can be damaging to the professional relationship: what you should and shouldn't do
  • Methods of Delivery



    The facilitator will employ a range of teaching methods including direct input, small and large group activities, discussions, use of case study material and PowerPoint slides.

    • What does it mean to be professional and what is a professional relationship
    • What standards inform our practice
    • What do we mean by confidentiality and what are the requirements in terms of information sharing
    • How standards be breached or broken
    • What is the difference between a professional relationship and a friendship
    • How and when is self disclosure useful or not? What can be shared and what can't
    • Touch and how to ensure we remain professional

    Target Audience

    Both new and experienced support staff who will benefit from an opportunity to define and reflect on fundamental principles of professional boundaries and good practice.

    There are no pre-training requirements for this course

    Upon completion of the course, the delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.
