Course Overview



Central Training's Introduction to Autism & Learning Disabilities will provide an introduction to learning disabilities and autistic spectrum conditions and will explore the challenges faced by people in these often-excluded groups. It will aim to equip delegates with the skills to show an understanding of the barriers to communication faced by some people with learning disabilities and what can be done to help. It will also aim to enable candidates to adapt their work and the support provided to meet clients' needs more effectively, establish an effective foundation for best practice, and understand difficulties with communication and social interaction. Finally, the candidates will have the opportunity to look at the autism diagnostic criteria: communication, social interaction, restricted thinking and repetitive behaviours.

Learning Outcomes



This course aims to enable candidates to:
  • Define what we mean by 'learning disability'
  • Demonstrate an understanding of autism as a complex, individual condition
  • Understand the history and perception of services for people with learning disabilities/autism
  • Demonstrate and understanding of the communication barriers faced by people with learning disabilities
  • Understand the communication and social interaction difficulties that autistic people may experience
  • Describe the impact that restricted thinking and repetitive behaviours has on autistic people
  • Recognise how sensory challenges can affect an autistic person
  • Develop ideas of how to support someone in the areas above

    This course will use a variety of training methods including: group exercises, group discussion, lecture, PowerPoint presentation and video.
