Suicide is an incredibly complex and emotive subject that can have a devastating impact on individuals, families, communities, and professionals. This course will enable delegates to raise their awareness and knowledge of suicide and learn effective strategies to confidently support individuals who may present with suicidal thoughts and behaviours. It will help delegates to explore risk and protective factors around suicide and to understand how to use practical strategies to identify and respond to these signs of risk.

This course aims to equip delegates with the skills to
  • Increase knowledge and awareness of suicide
  • Explore and increase understanding of at-risk groups
  • Understand suicidal thoughts and factors that influence suicidal behaviours
  • Confidently spot the signs of someone feeling suicidal
  • Recognise people asking for help
  • Understand the barriers people face including stigma and shame
  • Sensitively engage in conversations
  • Explore strategies to assess and respond to risk
  • Refer individuals to emergency services
  • Explore plans, policies, and procedures in order to aid prevention of suicide

  • Suicide: Definition, causes and risk factors
  • Early warning signs of distress
  • Effective communication with individuals who present with suicidal ideation
  • Risk Assessment and referring to support/ emergency services
  • Reducing risk, supporting well-being and resilience to aid prevention

Target Audience

This course will help anyone who would like to improve their understanding of suicide but will be of particular help to individuals and organisations who regularly work on the front line with clients who present with suicidal ideation.
