Lapse and Relapse: Understanding and Responding

Duration

Full Day

Course Overview

Lapse and relapse can occur as part of an individual's recovery from problematic substance use. Understanding the factors that can contribute to a return to substance use, and knowing how to respond constructively, can help professionals support individuals to reduce harm, re-engage with their recovery and make sustained changes.
This course explores the difference between lapse and relapse, the triggers and warning signs that may indicate an increased risk of relapse, and practical approaches to prevention. Delegates will consider how to respond following a lapse or relapse in a non-judgemental and person-centred way, supporting individuals to reduce risk, learn from the experience and continue working towards their recovery goals.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to equip delegates with the skills to
  • Understand lapse and relapse in the context of substance use and recovery
  • Recognise triggers, warning signs and high-risk situations associated with relapse
  • Identify factors that can increase or reduce an individual's risk of relapse
  • Support individuals to develop practical relapse prevention and coping strategies
  • Respond constructively and non-judgementally following a lapse or relapse
  • Support individuals to reduce harm and re-engage with their recovery goals

Methods of Delivery

The trainer will use presentations, case studies and practical exercises to support learning. Delegates will be encouraged to participate in group discussions and scenario-based activities, enabling them to explore approaches to lapse and relapse and apply their learning to situations relevant to their work.
