De-escalation & Restrictive Practice Awareness

Duration

Half Day

Course Overview

Staff working with children and young people may encounter situations where distress, dysregulation or behaviours of concern can escalate and increase the risk of harm. Understanding how to recognise and respond to these situations effectively can help prevent escalation and reduce the need for restrictive interventions. This course develops delegates’ understanding of restrictive practice and its potential impact on children and young people. It explores preventative and de-escalation approaches, least-restrictive practice and the importance of maintaining the child’s rights, dignity and wellbeing when responding to behaviours of concern.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to equip delegates with the skills to
  • Understand restrictive practice and its different forms
  • Recognise triggers and early signs of escalation
  • Use effective prevention and de-escalation strategies
  • Understand the impact of restrictive practices
  • Apply least-restrictive, child-centred approaches
  • Recognise responsibilities following restrictive interventions

Methods of Delivery

The trainer will use presentations, case studies and practical exercises to support learning. Delegates will be encouraged to participate in group discussions and activities, enabling them to apply their learning to situations relevant to the workplace.
