Missing from Care

Duration

Full Day

Course Overview

Children and young people who go missing from care can be exposed to significant risks, including exploitation, abuse and other forms of harm. Understanding why a child may go missing, recognising associated risks and responding appropriately are essential elements of safeguarding practice.

This course explores the factors that can contribute to missing episodes and supports delegates to develop an effective, child-centred response. It considers prevention and risk reduction, responsibilities when a child goes missing, multi-agency working and how staff can support children following their return.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to equip delegates with the skills to
  • Understand what is meant by a child going missing from care and the potential risks associated with missing episodes
  • Recognise factors that may contribute to a child going missing and indicators of increased risk
  • Identify links between missing episodes, exploitation and other safeguarding concerns
  • Understand appropriate actions and responsibilities when a child goes missing and when they return
  • Understand the importance of effective information sharing and multi-agency working
  • Use information and learning from missing episodes to inform risk assessment, planning and future safeguarding responses

Methods of Delivery

The trainer will use presentations, case studies and practical exercises to support learning. Delegates will be encouraged to participate in group discussions and activities, enabling them to apply their learning to situations relevant to the workplace.
