Self-Harm: Support Strategies & Risk Assessment

Course Overview


Self-harm is a relatively common phenomenon, especially amongst young people. This introductory one day course for support staff will explore some of the forms self-harm can take and explore some of the reasons why a person might harm themselves. The course will review current treatment pathways and therapeutic options and will go on to explore how support staff might tailor their support approaches to the needs of the individual in a safe, effective and person centred way. The course will highlight the support needs of staff who are working with people who self-harm, promoting the importance of reflective practice and staff self-care.

Learning Outcomes


This course aims to equip delegates with the skills to:
  • Define self-harm and the different forms it can take
  • Identify causes, functions and risk factors for self-harm
  • Identify treatment pathways and evidence-based therapies for people who self-harm
  • Describe a variety of support approaches that might be of help to someone who self-harms

    The trainer will use a variety of learning methods to both inform and engage delegates in a relaxed and interactive atmosphere, including PowerPoint presentation, flipchart work, group discussions and small group work.

    • Defining self-ham: causes, function and common misconceptions
    • People at risk, the cycle of self-harm and 'harm minimization'
    • The relationship between self-harm and suicide
    • Current treatment pathways, NICE guidelines and recommended therapies
    • Appropriate responses and support staff self-care
    • Risk assessment essentials, confidentiality and safeguarding
    • Case studies and testimonies

    Target Audience

    Individuals and volunteers who want to develop a better understanding of self-harm and ways to support clients who are at risk or have a history of suicidal and/or self-harming behaviours.
