Course Overview



This introductory and awareness-raising course is designed to help staff recognise and better understand domestic abuse in its various forms. The course explores patterns of power, control, and coercion within relationships, the impact of abuse on individuals and families, common warning signs and indicators, and the barriers that can make it difficult for individuals to leave abusive relationships. Delegates will also develop confidence in responding appropriately to disclosures and understanding available support and safety-planning options.

Learning Outcomes



This course aims to equip delegates with the skills to:
  • Identify the different forms and indicators of domestic abuse
  • Recognise patterns of coercion, control, and perpetrator behaviour
  • Explore the cycle of abuse and barriers to leaving abusive relationships
  • Describe the impact of domestic abuse on individuals, children, and families
  • Challenge common myths and misconceptions surrounding domestic abuse
  • Respond appropriately to disclosures and develop awareness of support and safety planning options


  • Methods of Delivery



    The facilitator will use a range of interactive training methods including group discussion, case studies, PowerPoint presentation, reflective activities, and scenario-based exercises to support learning and encourage discussion in a safe and supportive environment.

    • Definitions, forms, indicators, and myths surrounding domestic abuse
    • Coercive control, gaslighting, stalking, harassment, and perpetrator behaviours
    • The cycle of abuse, power and control wheel, and barriers to leaving
    • Impact on individuals, children, families, LGBTQ+ relationships, and familial abuse
    • Responding to disclosures, providing support, and signposting appropriately
    • Introduction to DASH, MARAC, risk factors, and basic safety planning awareness

    Target Audience

    Anyone working with people affected by Domestic Violence/Abuse.

    Training Considerations

    There are no pre-training requirements for this course.

    Certification

    Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
