Makaton Level 2

Course Overview



This workshop is for people supporting children or adults with learning disabilities or communication difficulties.
It supports delegates to build on skills and knowledge gained from attending the Level 1 course in using signs and symbols from the Makaton vocabulary as well as recognise its difference from other means of communication and how to use it in everyday life.

Learning Outcomes



This course aims to provide delegates with the skills to:
  • Use signs and symbols from stages 3 & 4 of the Makaton Vocabulary
  • Recognise key features of the Makaton Vocabulary and why it may be useful
  • Distinguish between Makaton and other means of communication
  • Recognise the evidence base for using Makaton
  • Identify ways to use the signs and symbols in everyday circumstances
  • Methods of Delivery



    A range of methods will be used. These include: demonstration; recognition and recall practice of signs; paired and small group work; games. There will be some presentations from the trainer.

    Course Content

    • Makaton vocabularies: background and rationale
    • Signs and symbols from stages 3 & 4 of the Makaton Vocabulary
    • Using Makaton in everyday life
    • The key principles of using the Makaton Vocabulary
    • Key research findings regarding use of Makaton

    Target Audience

    Carers and support workers of children or adults with learning disabilities; volunteers; advocates; nursery workers; anyone whose work or life brings them into contact with people who communicate with Makaton or who may benefit from doing so in the future.

    Training Considerations

    As delegates must have attended Makaton Level 1 training (or Day 1 of the Beginners workshop). Please bring the certificate you have received on the day.

    Certification

    The delegates will receive a certificate accredited by the Makaton Society upon completion of the course.
